ERREKA SUPPLIES FASTENING SOLUTIONS FOR THE DUNE SCIENTIFIC EXPERIMENT

15 January, 2024

Erreka has been selected to supply fastening solutions for the structure of the neutrino detector used in the DUNE experiment, under construction at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota, United States.

The detector is designed to contain 34,000 tonnes of liquid argon at a temperature of approximately -184°C and is located around 1,500 metres underground. The project will study neutrinos generated at Fermilab in Illinois and sent over a distance of 1,300 kilometres.

Erreka’s contribution covers the management of approximately 90,000 fasteners for the structure. Some of these components will incorporate Erreka Digital Bolt, a technology that directly measures load and supports inspections of the bolted joint throughout its service life.

Participation in the project requires compliance with critical operating conditions and full traceability and control of the components. The supply places Erreka’s engineering capabilities within an international scientific infrastructure involving around one thousand professionals from 30 countries.

The DUNE experiment aims to study the properties of neutrinos and advance knowledge of fundamental questions concerning the composition and evolution of the universe.
